The V – Week #12

Postgame

Tonight’s episode of The V saw current V champion EG Minigun take on the unique Zerg phenom Spanishiwa.

Game one was on Shattered Temple and saw some pretty unique play coming from Spanishiwa. At the start of the game, Spanishiwa managed to build an Evolution Chamber at the top of Minigun’s ramp. Just as Minigun destroyed the Evolution Chamber a swarm of Zergling rushed up the ramp. Luckily for Minigun, he managed to hold off the attack with a few Zealots. While Minigun was defending, Spanishiwa drop an expansion at his natural and teched up to Banelings. Minigun got his three Warpgates up and moved out with a squad of Gateway units. While Minigun was attacking the natural expansion, Spanishiwa ran his Speed Lings into Minigun’s main. Spanishiwa managed to kill off a ton of Probes at the expense of his natural expansion. Minigun moved up into Spanishiwa’s main, but thanks to the returning Speed Lings and a few Spine Crawlers Spanishiwa held the attack. The game ended when Spanishiwa Baneling busted Minigun’s front door.

Game two was on Backwater Gulch. Both players expanded early and teched up. While Minigun was massing an army of Stalkers and Sentries, Spanishiwa build a secret expansion and a ton of Zerglings. While Minigun was moving out across the map, he managed to catch two Overlords that were full of Zerglings. Luckily for Spanishiwa, while those two Overlords were picked off, he managed to sneak a third Overlord (also full of Zerglings) into the back of Minigun’s main. While harassing Minigun’s main, there was an engagement in the middle of the map. While Minigun was technically more cost effective, Spanishiwa managed to overpower him thanks to Baneling drops, Fungal Growth and a ton of Zerglings. From that point, Minigun was on the back foot. After a seemingly endless harassment Minigun tapped out.

Game three was on Terminus RE and saw Spanishiwa fast expand into his infamous gasless build. Minigun went with a three Gate fast expand into Dark Templar build. Despite having a row of Spine Crawlers and a Spore Colony waiting, Minigun managed to sneak two DTs into the main. Ultimately, the DTs really didn’t do much except delay mining time. Minigun eventually moved out with a squad of Gateway units, but was spotted by Spanishiwa. Taking advantage of the situation, Spanishiwa counter attacked ultimately destroying Minigun’a main Nexus. Minigun tried to move out again, and again, Spanishiwa counter attacked forcing the gg.

Game four was on Metalopolis (close positions) and saw both players go for some early worker harass with Minigun Pylon blocking Spanishiwa’s natural while Spanishiwa went with a gas steal. After both bases were cleaned up, Minigun went with a four Warpgate build and managed to snipe Spanishiwa’s expansion. Minigun stopped pressuring and decided to get his own expansion up. Once Spanishiwa was free from the contain, he took his natural expansion again. Minigun teched to Colossus while Spanishiwa went with Infestors. Spanishiwa tried to push out with his Zergling/Infestor unit composition, but was no match for Minigun’s tight Force Field play. Once Spanishiwa saw that he threw his units away, he gged.

Game five was on Typhon Peaks and was the strangest of the series. Spanishiwa did the typical Zerg fast expansion. In response Minigun took his own expansion. While Minigun was massing up six Warpgates, Spanishiwa built a secret third base. Minigun moved out and obliterated Spanishiwa’s natural. In response, Spanishiwa manged to get a Nydus into Minigun’s main and force a base trade scenario. After wiping out both the main and the natural of Spanishiwa, Minigun returned back to his natural expansion to clean up Spanishiwa’s counter attack.  With both players on one base, there was a little lull in the action. Both players teched up, Minigun getting Void Ray/Colossus while Spanishiwa getting Banelings/Infestors. Both players double expanded bringing it up to three base vs. three base. Despite constant harassment from Spanishiwa, Minigun managed to get a critical mass of Void Rays, Colossus and Gateway units and ultimately rolled over Spanishiwa.

Game Six was on Xel’Naga Caverns and saw Spanishiwa fast expand. Minigun went with a fast Citadel four Gate build allowing his to get Blink Stalkers out. Minigun was the first to be aggressive and despite having a much smaller army, his tight Blink micro made his army extremely cost effective. Despite his best efforts, Spanishiwa could not hold off Minigun’s relentless Blink Stalker aggression and was forced to gg.

The final game was on Crossfire SE and saw Spanishiwa go with the same Evolution Chamber ramp block seen in the first game. Once the everything was cleaned up, Minigun decided to go with a four Warpgate rush. Too bad that Spanishiwa had five Spine Crawlers and a ton of Speedlings to hold off the push. After seeing this, Minigun pulled back and looped around to the destructible rocks causing Spanishiwa to relocate his Spine Crawlers. Once Minigun saw this, he immediately moved to the front again and attacked the natural. Spanishiwa managed to beat back the attack by dropping Zerglings on Minigun’s army, negating his Force Field play. It was Spanishiwa’s turn to go the offensive and thanks to some nice Infestor play and Baneling drops Minigun was forced to gg.

Both players showed a tremendous amount of skill and should be extremely proud of their games. Be sure to tune in next Friday when Spanishiwa will be returning to defend his title of Champion of The V.
